The 2006 Social Compact Awards

On May 25th, 2006, national leaders from the public, private and non-profit arenas gathered in Washington, DC, to celebrate the vision, innovation and success of eight DrillDown cities from across the nation. Millions of dollars of new investment in previously underserved and disinvested communities stand as a testament to the cutting edge partnerships forged between civic, corporate and community leaders.

Like the newly redeveloped Gulfgate Center, in Houston, that created 2,000 new jobs and was the first new inner city construction in 50 years. The event recognized those partners and leaders at the newly refurbished historic Tivoli Theatre which sits in the heart of the Washington, DC, DrillDown neighborhood, Columbia Heights.

Leading by example, Social Compact began its recognition program in 1990 to recognize the country’s best partnerships between leading financial services companies and community groups in improving their neighborhoods.

“By looking at some of our seemingly distressed neighborhoods through different lenses, instead of seeing despair we see ‘emerging markets’.  Likewise, when we look at the community-based leaders, who know how to successfully do business in these emerging markets, we see ‘community consultants’.  These award winners represent the future of doing business in America’s lower income communities.”
